Duʿa for a Righteous Child

Dua for a Righteous Child — The Dua of Zakariyya

دُعَاءُ الذُّرِّيَّةِ الطَّيِّبَةِ

Standing in the prayer niche, watching Maryam provided for by Allah out of season, the elderly Zakariyya asked for what seemed impossible: a child. Allah recorded his exact words in the Quran — and answered them with Yahya.

This is the dua of every parent who wants more than a healthy baby: a tayyib child — good, pure, and righteous. It asks Allah not just for offspring, but for offspring "min ladunka" — as a gift directly from Him.

1. Duʿa for a Righteous Child

رَبِّ هَبْ لِي مِن لَّدُنكَ ذُرِّيَّةً طَيِّبَةً إِنَّكَ سَمِيعُ الدُّعَاءِ

Rabbi hab lī min ladunka dhurriyyatan ṭayyibatan, innaka samīʿud-duʿāʾ.

My Lord, grant me from Yourself righteous offspring. Indeed, You are the Hearer of supplication.

2. For Joy and Righteousness Through Your Children

رَبَّنَا هَبْ لَنَا مِنْ أَزْوَاجِنَا وَذُرِّيَّاتِنَا قُرَّةَ أَعْيُنٍ وَاجْعَلْنَا لِلْمُتَّقِينَ إِمَامًا

Rabbanā hab lanā min azwājinā wa dhurriyyātinā qurrata aʿyunin wajʿalnā lil-muttaqīna imāmā.

Our Lord, grant us from our spouses and offspring comfort to our eyes and make us an example for the righteous.

When to Recite It

Recite it throughout pregnancy and beyond — in sujood, between the adhan and iqamah, in the last third of the night, and after the obligatory prayers, when dua is most readily answered. It is equally beloved for couples hoping to conceive.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "dhurriyyatan tayyibah" mean?

Tayyib means good, pure, and wholesome. Zakariyya did not ask merely for a child but for a good child — scholars note the dua teaches parents to attach their hopes to the child's righteousness, not just their existence. The answer was Yahya, of whom Allah said: "righteous among the prophets."

When is dua for a child most likely to be answered?

In the times of accepted dua: the last third of the night, in sujood, between adhan and iqamah, on Friday, while fasting, and during rainfall. Zakariyya's story also teaches persistence — he supplicated into old age without despairing of Allah's answer.
